Making of Maki-e iPhone Case

After getting the designs, the maki-e artists start a process that has more than 1500 years old. Maki-e is a japanese lacquer sprinkled with gold or silver powder as a decoration using amakizutsu or a kebo brush. The technique was developed mainly in the Heian Period(794-1185) and blossomed in the Edo Period(1603-1868). Maki-e objects were initially designed as household items for court nobles, they soon gained more popularity and were adopted by royal families and military leaders as an indication of power.

Después de recibir los diseños, los artistas del maki-e comienzan un proceso que lleva tiene más de 1500 años de antigüedad. El Maki-e es una técnica de pintado japonés en el que se rocía oro o plata en polvo a modo de decoración usando un amakizutsu o un pincel kebo. Esta técnica fue desarrollada principalmente durante el Periodo Heian (794-1185) y llegó a su máximo esplendor durante el Periodo Edo (1603-1868).Los objetos con Maki-e originalmente estaba destinados a ser de uso diario para los nobles de la corte, rápidamente ganaron popularidad y fueron adoptados por las familias reales y líderes militares como indicador de poder.

To create different colours and textures, maki-e artists use a variety of metal powders including gold, silver, copper, brass, lead, aluminum, platinum, pewter, as well as their alloys.

Para crear los distintos colores y texturas, los artistas del maki-e usan una gran variedad de metales en polvo, incluyendo oro, plata, cobre, bronze, aluminio, platino, estaño, además de sus aleaciones.

Bamboo tubes and soft brushes of various sizes are used for laying powders and drawing fine lines. As it requires highly-skilled craftsmanship to produce a maki-e painting, young artists usually go through many years of training to develop the skills and to ultimately become maki-e masters.

Usan tubos de bamboo y pinceles muy suaves de varios tamaños para aplicar estos polvos y dibujar líneas muy finas. Se requiere una técnica muy alta para producir una pintura de maki-e, los artistas jóvenes suelen pasar muchos años entrenando para desarrollar esta habilidad y llegar a ser maestros del maki-e.

These iphone cases are not printed, they are handmade, unique, with gold and sea shell (depending on the design)

Estos diseños no son impresos, son hechos a mano, únicos, con oro y concha marina (dependiendo del diseño)

The red colour will remain only on the crane thanks to the special sticky “paint” he applied before.

El color rojo sólo quedará en la garza gracias a la pegajosa “pintura” especial que aplicó anteriormente.

They add gold into the designs, but its not as simple as sticking the gold, they actually make different tones of gold so it give more options for the designs – the one of the photo above has 5 tones of gold

Adicionan oro en los diseños, pero no es tan simple como sólo pegar el oro, de hecho, manejan varios tonos de oro para dar más opciones en el diseño – el de la foto contiene 5 tonos de oro.

This oil is for polishing and making brighter the gold

Este aceite se usa para pulir y sirve para que el oro brille más.

This part of the process would be the first one, very important to give the base painting for the maki-e.

Esta sería la primera parte del proceso, muy importante ya que se aplica la pintura base para el maki-e.

These handles are attached to the item to be painted, so the artist can work easier without making a mess.

Estas manijas se pegan a los objetos para ser pintados, así los artistas pueden trabajar mejor y no se ensucian con la pintura.

This is the place where the Raden (sea shells) and other materials are attached to the items.

Este es el lugar donde se colocan el Raden y otros materiales.

I think the image speak by it self – the details of their works is extraordinary

Both items have the same silver colour but differente base colour.

Ambos objetos tienen el mismo color plateado pero con diferente color de base.

The 2 plates are done with the same technique and colours, the brighter one is 1 year old and the darker one is new – the colour changes with time and becomes prettier. So by having one with this technique, you can enjoy the evolution of it, almost like looking into a living item.
